Pupil Leadership
Prefects
At Robin Hood Academy we believe that prefects have an important role to play in the day to day organisation and culture of our school. Only Year 6 pupils are allowed to apply for this position so it is considered to be very prestigious.
Prefects are, in a sense, junior members of staff and as such they are expected to take their role seriously.
The position not only allows the Year 6 pupils to lead by example and demonstrate their responsibility, it also enables the younger children to learn from a good example.
Every prefect has to submit a written application for the position. Their applications go through a selection process. Whilst School Council members are chosen democratically by children, it is staff who identify and encourage suitable children to apply for the prefect position.
Once their application has been successful, prefects are announced in an assembly and they are given a prefect badge to wear.
Prefects must lead by example at all times in their behaviour, the respect they show to others and their school uniform. They take on many roles and have many responsibilities, such as:
- Remind children to walk up and down the corridors and the stairs calmly and quietly and support classes to line up at the end of playtimes
- Support a positive dining hall culture
- Contributing to the school newsletter
- Working with classes during wet break times
- Showing visitors around the school
- Opening and closing school events, e.g. Open Day
- Assisting with PTA events
- Improving the school grounds and being champions of sustainability
Two Head Pupils are selected from amongst the prefects. The head Pupils will have the opportunity to meet with the Headteacher and/or members of the Senior Leadership Team on a regular basis to discuss school developments and will have the opportunity to represent the school at school events.
